Darjeeling Himalayan Railway –

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Historically, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway originated in 1878, when Franklin Prestage, an agent with the then Eastern Bengal Railway (EBR), proposed a 2-foot gauge (610 mm) hill tramway followed by a hill cart road from Siliguri to Darjeeling. EBR’s interest was in developing rail links to the city as he and the North Bengal State Railway operated associated broad and meter gauge systems – connected by steam ferry crossings of the Ganges (River Ganga) – connecting Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Siliguri. By 1887, these two railways were merged to form the East Bengal State Railway. Construction of the DHR by the Darjeeling Steam Tramway Company began in 1879, with work carried out simultaneously on unconnected sections to complete it as quickly as possible. By February 1880, good progress had been made and on 4 March a whole section of line was available up to Tindharia, to operate a special train (pulled by the contractor’s loco ‘Tiny’) to the Viceroy Lord Lytton. Managing agents were appointed to look after legal and financial matters and the firm of M/s Gillanders Arbuthnot & Co. of Calcutta was appointed.

This relationship lasted for more than 50 years until the DHR was effectively nationalized, which was taken over by the Government of India in 1948 after the country’s independence. On 2 December 1999, UNESCO declared DHR a World Heritage Site. Later two more railway lines were added and the site came to be known as one of the mountain railroads of India.

Singalila National Park –

Singalila National Park

Creamy magnolias on bare trees were scattering the last rays of the sun. I wanted the star-shaped flowers to keep twinkling even at night. A pair of yellow-throated Martens, clearly more golden than the other, were grazing under the magnolia tree. Alert animals were running around, while a sturdy, aluminum-bodied Land Rover was moving along the paved mountain road within Singalila National Park. Singalila is a park of 78 square kilometers [ Best Tourist Places in Darjeeling] It is famous for the trek route to Sandakphu that passes through it. There were blue primulas along the road of the bone. Canopined ferns were hanging on the road cut from the mountain.

The pits formed by light rain overnight were shining in the sun. Waterfalls were flowing slowly from the slope of the mountain.
